Background of the Study
Academic lectures are an important medium for disseminating knowledge and shaping discourse within educational institutions. In Igbo academic lectures in Enugu, genre-specific features—such as specialized vocabulary, structured argumentation, and formal discourse markers—play a critical role in conveying complex information effectively. These lectures are characterized by a unique blend of indigenous rhetorical styles and academic conventions, reflecting the cultural and linguistic identity of Igbo-speaking scholars (Ikechukwu, 2023). This study evaluates the discourse features that are specific to Igbo academic lectures by analyzing lecture transcripts using both qualitative discourse analysis and computational linguistic methods. The research aims to identify how these features contribute to clarity, persuasiveness, and audience engagement. By understanding the genre-specific conventions, the study seeks to inform instructional strategies that enhance academic communication and promote effective knowledge transfer in Igbo higher education settings (Chukwudi, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of genre-specific discourse in academic settings, there is limited research on the distinctive features of Igbo academic lectures in Enugu. Existing models often rely on general academic discourse frameworks, which may not account for the cultural and linguistic particularities of Igbo. This gap restricts the ability of educators to tailor teaching methods that effectively leverage these unique discourse features, potentially hindering learning outcomes. A focused analysis is necessary to capture the nuances of Igbo academic lectures and to develop pedagogical strategies that align with the linguistic context (Ikechukwu, 2023; Chukwudi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To identify genre-specific discourse features in Igbo academic lectures.
2. To assess their impact on lecture clarity and audience engagement.
3. To propose instructional strategies to enhance academic discourse.
Research Questions:
1. What are the key discourse features in Igbo academic lectures?
2. How do these features affect comprehension and engagement?
3. What teaching interventions can optimize academic communication?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it illuminates the unique discourse features of Igbo academic lectures, offering insights that can improve teaching methodologies and academic performance. The findings will support the development of culturally relevant educational practices in Igbo higher education (Ikechukwu, 2023; Nwankwo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to analyzing Igbo academic lecture transcripts in Enugu using discourse analysis and does not extend to other academic genres.
